Motherhood can have its struggles. Especially when life throws you a curve ball and your baby refuses to sleep. Everyone is affected, baby doesn't sleep - mom doesn't sleep, everyone ends up exhausted and sleep deprived. I had a call from such a mom last week. I went to visit and when she opened the door I could see the exhaustion in her eyes. I spent a wonderful afternoon talking to her explaining that she was not alone and eventually the exhaustion stage will pass. Talking to her brought a flood of memories back from when I had my children. I can vividly remember the endless days of little sleep and the days it just became too much and you sat on the couch and melted into a puddle of tears thinking you couldn't go on. You never really forget those days. I think they also make you stronger to prepare for the journey of motherhood. We chatted for a bit and I could see a glimmer of hope creep into her eyes . She reached out to me and I gave her a hug that silently said your a great mom and things are going to be okay. I spent an hour with the beautiful little baby while mom was able to take a break and take some time for herself. Before I left we talked about sleeping and self soothing and I could see in those big beautiful eyes that she was ok. Motherhood is a journey like no other. It has its ups and downs but a journey that I wouldn't trade for anything.
